Instant Pot Baked Potatoes

The  meal I make the most in my Instant Pot is Baked Potatoes.  I love how fast I can make them, vs the oven.  I also appreciate that I can make them all at once, vs individually in the microwave.  They come out perfect each time and under 30 minutes!

I prefer to cut mine in half because we often buy extra large potatoes, that seems to best fit the Instant Pot this way.  Your aim should be to use potatoes similar size or cut them to similar size.  If you are planning on cutting them in half but have small ones too, just don’t cut the small ones.  I cut them crosswise.  Remember as well that if you are not going to cut them YOU MUST pierce them with a fork a few times.  You do not want exploding potatoes.

There is no need to use foil.  I don’t butter mine ahead of time, but I do have butter, sour cream, and chili to serve with the potatoes. What are your family’s favorite toppings?  I have one child that makes mashed potatoes (and only adding salt) out of hers every time. One that adds everything to his (just like his mom!) and one that carefully peels the potato peel off and then adds ketchup.

  • 4-6 Large Russet or Idaho Potatoes Scrubbed and cut in half
  • Butter, Sour Cream, Chili, for toppings


  • You'll want to have your insert/ "trivet" inside the instant pot.
  • Add one cup of cold water and add the potatoes (if you choose to not cut in half you must pierce with a fork a few times). Potatoes can stack on each other. Place the lid on the instant pot and seal so it beeps.
  • Set the pressure to 12-14 minutes on high. Use the Manual button and set timer: (4 potatoes do 12 minutes, 5 potatoes do 13 minutes, 6 potatoes do 14 minutes).
  • The Instant Pot will beep when the cooking time has finished, you then need to wait approximately 10 minutes to allow to the pressure to naturally release. After 10 minutes do a quick release of the remaining pressure and then slowly open the lid (remember if it doesn't open, it's not ready) away from you and have somewhere to set it.
  • Use oven mitts to remove the potatoes. Serve with your toppings!
