Every summer, I order at least one bushel of fresh peaches. I use to have a friend that had a tree I could pick from but she no longer owns the house where the tree was. We have always said we were going to plant our own tree, but have yet to do that.
I get at least one bushes and peel, pit and slice my own peaches to home can them. I can them in quart jars and we eat them all winter long. That is if they last that long. My kids love opening a jar and eating them with a fork.
I am always looking for great new ways to use the peaches in recipes. This time, it was Slow Cooker Spiced Peach Oatmeal. Pumpkin pie spice and ground nutmeg add the spice and flavor to the oatmeal.
The key to making oatmeal in the slow cooker is using Steel Cut Oats. Steel Cut Oats are a relatively unprocessed product. Where old-fashioned oats are processed to allow for faster cooking. Steel Cut Oats take longer to cook. If you use quick oats or old-fashioned oats in the slow cooker, your end product will be a huge mushy burnt tasting mess.
